Helpful Tips: Expedite with Acrobat Preflight

7/23/2014

Today, we are going to look at two ways to help expedite you project through XMF Remote.  We will complete fundamental checks on our PDF using Acrobat’s two built-in tools for print production. To start, we simply open the PDF in Acrobat.

1. Output Preview
By clicking on Tools > Print Production, we can chose Output Preview. This will display ALL colors used in our document.   In the second screen, we see there is CMYK + 2 Spot colors.

XMF can change all colors to CMYK, but in some instances where multiple colors and shadow effects combine, it my trap differently than we expect.  View the results before you upload by following this simple step.
You can change ALL colors to CMYK, by choosing Convert Colors, checking the box that states, “Convert Colors to Output Intent.”   Then, choose the Coated GRACoL 2006 profile and clicking OK.  You will see a warning before the change is made.  If it comes out differently than you expect, you can close the PDF without Saving and NO CHANGES will be applied.

2. Preflight
Another useful tool is to use Acrobat’s Preflight tool.  This gives the same report as XMF’s Preflight tool.  It will diagnose missing fonts, low resolution images and other items that may affect print quality.

By clicking on Tools > Print Production, we can chose Preflight.  We usually use the Sheetfed Offset or Web Offset Heat Set profiles (the reports will be very similar.)

When the report comes up, you can double-click any item you wish to view, Acrobat will zoom in and circle the error selected. (see screen 2).  It is visible that the burst is low resolution.  Acrobat will do the same for missing fonts.

Now that we have the information we need, we can choose to fix or ignore the items we found.  Unless other technical issues are found, these 2 simple steps can carve a shift or two off of the entire project!

Best of all, we can give our Panaprint CSR a pre-emptive email to “Go Ahead on XX items,” so that the project will not be delayed by the final Prepress check before the project goes to press!
